Our story
Gayatri optical was started in 1986 by
Ashok godia. In his last year at university Ashok needed to buy a
new pair of glasses and was staggered by the Rs200 price tag. He was
studying for his finals but found his thoughts continually returning
to the outrageous price he’d paid for his glasses. He was convinced
that there must be a way of making glasses less expensive and so, in
the library in between lectures, he could be found researching the
Indian glasses market. But to his frustration, when he called up
suppliers he was met with a blanket silence by the whole industry.
Wondering what they were hiding, he eventually learnt that the real
price of a pair of glasses should be around Rs50 and that Big name
opticians were regularly making profit margins in excess of 1000% on
a pair of glasses.
He realised that once a customer’s eyes had
been tested and they had obtained an accurate prescription, glasses
could be ordered over the internet at a fraction of the cost.
And so Gayatri optical began to take shape
with the idea of putting the customer directly in contact with the
glasses laboratory. While taking his finals at university, Ashok
would hurry out of the exam room get back to designing the website.
Gayatri opticals opened for business from
the front room of home in July 1st 1986 and began taking one or two
orders per day. Word began to spread and within two months of
trading, the phone was ringing constantly and the orders began to
pour in. With thousands of enquiries by the end of his summer
holidays, what had begun as a sideline project had become a full
blown business.
The company is expanding rapidly and the
management aims to make Gayatri opticals a worldwide household brand
name as quickly as possible.
